Partnering with Gilbane, who has assembled a world-class design and construction team, Cox and Dinkins will help plan, design, develop, and construct the University of South Carolina’s health sciences campus in the Bull Street District in downtown Columbia. The new campus will provide state-of-the-art space for clinical education and bring together researchers to help meet South Carolina’s health challenges.

The initial stage includes a 160,000SF multidisciplinary research building and a 130,000SF education building for the School of Medicine. Cox and Dinkins assisted in the programming and master planning of the campus, including future buildings, connections to the Bull Street District, the Smith Branch Greenway, Prisma Health Richland Hospital, and USC’s main campus. Challenges include the design and placement of a Central Energy Plant; phasing of buildings; green space; elevation differences between Harden Street and the project with connections to Harden Street but also to the existing tunnel under Harden St; and an existing 84” storm drainage pipe that is used for flooding relief that bisects the project site.
